The jazz exhibit: The back story
The. black and white portraits were originally part of a 2006 exhibit shown at the American Jazz Museum which was curated by jazz historian Chuck Haddix.
Haddix is host of the weekly NPR radio show “The Fish Fry” which he has hosted and produced for 30 years and director of the Marr Sound Archives, a collection of 350,000 historic sound recordings housed in the Miller Nichols Library at the University of Missouri–Kansas City.
In 2025, Haddix was involved in producing an album of previously unreleased Charlie Parker music that was recorded in Kansas City between in the 1940s and 1950s. The rare recordings were in the Marr Sound Archives and include Parker playing with the Jay McShann Band and never-before-heard private sessions.
Haddix has authored two books about Kansas City jazz.
Kansas City Jazz: From Ragtime to Bebop - A History | Frank Driggs and Chuck Haddix (2005)
Bird: The Life and Music of Charlie Parker | Chuck Haddix (2013)
Many of Haddix’s commentaries about Kansas City jazz from that original Dan White show are included on this website with his permission.
